A Film Project Becomes a Living Network
Public record Creator recollectionMushroom began as a feature-film project, but the audience was invited into the world before the film existed. Websites became institutions. Emails arrived from people who did not exist. Videos behaved like evidence rather than promotion. Participants moved from spectators to applicants, then to Trialists, and finally into the history of the fiction itself.
The title described the structure. A mushroom is only the visible fruiting body of a much larger hidden mycelium. Each email, tape, website, character, disk and puzzle was a visible body. The real organism was the player network connecting them.
01 // THE PLEA FOR HELP, T & THE FIRST TRAILHEAD
The public trailhead arrived as an unexpected email leading to a video and a plea for help. A missing friend known only as T had become connected to a discovery on an island. Years later, a Betamax tape and a note appeared. T had spoken of doing “big things” with a company. That company was Friedrich & John Pharmaceuticals.
T was the quiet, absent human anchor of the investigation. As the ARG progressed, T became increasingly remote and difficult to read. The deeper question stopped being merely “where is T?” and became “what still counts as T?” A body, a recording, a copied memory, a company file and the changes left in other people could all preserve conflicting versions of the same person.
02 // F&J PHARMACEUTICALS & SURTSEY1977
F&J presented itself with calm, expensive administrative confidence. Its application offered a set of medical trials, but only one route made sense: Surtsey1977. Players who selected it became Trialists. The company asked for bodies, identities and consent while the game quietly measured trust, leadership, hesitation, conflict and the willingness to continue after manipulation.
03 // ANGEL, DR BRONTIS, T, THEO & SMOKEYPARKIN
Angel Milton
A research figure who monitored the player community, mocked its lack of cohesion, identified emergent leadership and later adopted the polished voice of Surtsey1977’s official contact.
Dr Brontis
The colder institutional intelligence behind the trials. Brontis does not perform madness. The database, the timing and the classifications speak for him.
T
The quiet missing insider at the centre of the original trail. T withdrew as the story deepened, leaving the group to interpret fragments, recordings and increasingly uncertain evidence.
Theo
A manic, cheeky and bad-tempered presence who later appeared directly inside the players’ Discord. Theo disrupted conversations, baited Trialists, contradicted assumptions and generally made a mess of the group’s attempts to establish a stable reality. Players suspected Theo might be T, a copy of T, or something using T’s history, but they were never certain.
SmokeyParkin
A creator handle, archival identity and later fictional correspondent. Researching the name could lead outside the game, only for the fiction to colonise what the player found there.
04 // THE CRACKER COMMUNITY & THE REAL DRAMA
Trialists built the infrastructure required to solve Mushroom: group chats, Discord rooms, shared documents, spreadsheets and informal archives. They compared personalised messages, tested trial names, decoded number patterns and watched pages change state.
That collective intelligence was also the battlefield. Players had to decide who to trust, who was withholding evidence, whether an apparent attack was part of the fiction and whether the operators were hiding among them under ordinary handles. Intercepted F&J communications even identified an emergent player leader, remembered publicly as Reuben Shion. Leadership itself became evidence.
05 // VIDEO PUZZLES, CHANGING WEBSITES & ORANGE FLOPPIES
Videos carried performance, plot and hidden information at the same time. Corporate training material, pleas for help and intercepted footage could contain frame-level clues, strange edits, spoken anomalies or details that became meaningful only when compared with a website or message.
The web layer was not a static archive. Pages opened, closed and changed. Trial choices appeared after collective action. An inert route could become active because somebody elsewhere had solved a physical clue. Earlier versions often survived only as screenshots and memory, turning yesterday’s page into contested history.
06 // THE TWO ETHEREUM GEOCACHES
Two of Mushroom’s most memorable breaches into the physical world were geocached floppy disks. Each contained the means to recover one whole Ethereum coin. Both coins were successfully transferred and converted into real money, worth approximately $600 each at the time.
This was not an in-game voucher. A fictional pharmaceutical conspiracy produced a real treasure hunt, which yielded a real cryptographic asset, which became spendable cash. After the first recovery, no later disk could be dismissed as decoration. It might contain story, access, identity or value.
The mechanism also mirrored Mushroom’s philosophy. Cryptocurrency ownership sits with whoever controls the correct key. In the ARG, identity increasingly appeared to work the same way: continuity might sit not in a body, but in possession of the information required to reconstitute it.
07 // THE TEMPLE OF MISERABLE BLISS
The Temple of Miserable Bliss marked the shift from corporate conspiracy into cosmology. F&J’s research language and the Temple’s spiritual language appeared to describe the same process from different sides: transformation, group cohesion, sacrifice, suffering and the possibility that continuance might not preserve the self that desired it.
Early Mushroom asked whether a company had done something to T. Theo’s later Discord intrusion made even that premise unstable. The Temple phase asked whether the company had discovered, built or joined something much larger than itself. If F&J was only one node serving a distributed intelligence, exposing the laboratory did not reveal the top of the hierarchy. It revealed another fruiting body.
The Reality Shifts of Dimension 108
- A plea for help became a missing-person investigation.
- The missing-person investigation became a pharmaceutical trial.
- The trial became an observation of the player community itself.
- The company conflict became a spiritual and cosmological project.
- Geocaches proved that online fiction could transfer real-world value.
- Creator identities and character identities began to overlap.
- The campaign stopped behaving like a present-tense game and became the past of another world.
Exile, Parallel Selves & a Reality That Was Not Home
Creator recollectionAt the height of the ARG, the frame changed again. Core characters vanished and the Trialist community was displaced into Dimension 107 for close to a year. The objective was no longer simply to recover T or expose F&J. Theo’s interference had made it impossible to know whether the missing person, the Discord intruder and the identity carried between realities were one being or several. The community had to understand the rules of an adjacent reality and find a way back to Dimension 108.
Communication relays thinned the boundary between worlds. Players in 108 could send messages across the divide and encounter versions of people whose histories had developed differently. The parallel selves were not simple doubles. They demonstrated that identity could diverge while retaining enough shared information to recognise its other branch.
The ARG Changes Historical Tense
Public record Creator recollectionThe Civitas Universe did not replace Mushroom with a clean sequel. It gave the accumulated players, handles, institutions, arguments and artefacts somewhere to continue. Real Trialists became characters, citizens, expatriates, organisations, locations and fragments of lore. The ARG community became a source population for a future history.
Civitas Nihilium
A cyberpunk city claiming to have eliminated crime through systems of detection, classification and control. The polite administrative horror of F&J became civic infrastructure.
The Mysteries of Profundum
A text-adventure continuation in which language, hidden interfaces and the act of interpretation remain unstable. The world begins to recognise that it is being observed and played.
Civitas 2230
The intimate Mushroom network expands to the scale of autonomous city-states, institutions and geopolitical systems. The experiment becomes civilisation.
THE GLEE HEADS, THE DUCHESS & THE WHITE ROOM
Within Dimension 2, Mushroom’s interdimensional contaminant manifested as Glee. The Glee Heads, led by The Duchess in The White Room, developed awareness that their reality was being shaped by players and artefacts in Dimension 108, which they called Profundum.
THE DURONIC BROTHERHOOD, THEO & CIVITAS THEODORE
The Duronic Brotherhood worshipped Profundum from the Warrens of Enoch. Their cosmology connected with the vanished physicist Ettore Majorana and the Arkon entity Theo, eventually leading to the construction of the holy city-state Civitas Theodore. The reuse of Theo’s name may be continuity, mutation, appropriation or deliberate misdirection. It should not be treated as retroactive proof that the Discord Theo and the original T were the same person.
Mushroom had turned participants into history. Dimension 2 gave that history a world large enough to retain it.
